Game Review #1 - Prototype

Out of the park.

This bundle of computer code has everything an approaching-thirty-years-old gamer needs. Viral outbreak in Manhattan? Check. Mutated, super-powered hero? Check. Caught between the lines of mutants and military, playing them off against themselves? Check.

Tanks? Check.

There are one or two moments where the storyline goes formulaic and you have a good idea of what is going to happen or what you have to do, but they are rare--and it hardly matters anyway, because it just means that you know who you have to kill, and killing is what drives this game. Killing everybody, and there are so many ways to do it. Wolverine claws. Morphing your fists into sledgehammers to crack open APCs. Sprinting up the side of a building at 40mph, running across the roof, ripping off a huge AC unit at the top, leaping off the edge, throwing the AC at a hovering helicopter gunship--destroying it in midair--falling to the ground with the burning wreckage, then chucking that at an eight foot tall mutant hunter that's bounding in your direction with a look to kill.

You know, stuff like that.

Highly recommended.
